The US Post Office celebrates the aloha shirt with a series of stamps
The U.S. Post Office issued stamps earlier this year commemorating my favorite form of casual-ware, the aloha shirt. Each of the 5 stamps in the series depicts a different classic shirt: two show surfers and their boards; another fossil fish, shells, and sea stars, one the bird of paradise flower, and the last the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii's big island. The stamps use photographs taken by Honolulu-based photographer Ric Noyle of historic shirts from island-based manufacturers and retailers Alfred Shaheen, Watumull's, Leilani, and Malihini.
The 32-cent (first class postcard) stamps have proven to be unusually popular, selling more than 50 million in the month of April alone. In June, the post office reissued the stamps with adhesive-backing in books of 10, joining the already released rolls and sheets introduced in January.
Besides the stamps, the USPS is also selling giclée prints and other collectibles of the stamp designs.
