The Tiki Bar, Solomons Island, MD

Tiki Bar, Solomons Island, MD The Tiki Bar in Solomons Island, Maryland is only open seasonally — but when it does open up in the spring, it's a huge spectacle with upwards of 10,000 people arriving for the party.

The open air bar got a huge renovation in 2006 from carver and tiki bar designer Bosko, whose signs and carvings are prominently featured. The drink menu features a Mai-Tai, Kokomo (reportedly the best drink in the house), Blue Tiki, and four other rum drinks.

Anybody ever been?

Yup, I went there with Vern (ikitnrev) back in 2006. The best drink in the house was the Habenero Margarita, it was so hot, it made my eyes water.

Been there – it’s about 60-90 mins from Greater DC. All their drinks are from mixes in plastic cups. Their audience is mainly the boater & biker crowds. No food, no draft beer (they serve cans), and sometimes general mayhem there on holiday weekends.

That being said, the Cajun Margarita is indeed a hot blast! Their mai tai is okay, but far from Trader Vic’s. On the plus side, they have a store where they sell mugs (even though they don’t serve in ‘em) by Tiki Farm customized for the place, shirts, and other miscellaneous tiki wares. This, combined with Vera’s White Sands (which is on the way to Solomon’s) makes for nearly 1 good tiki experience in Eastern Maryland.

PS – all that being said… the drinks can be strong. The bar’s neighbors are locked in a perpetual legal battle over zoning. 2008 has already seen two DUI fatalities from folks on their way from the Tiki Bar. Travel there and back safely!

The gift shop has a lot of cool merch, but it’s extremely expensive. I paid $35 for a polo shirt with a small bar logo on the pocket, and $25 for a Tiki Farm Sufferin’ Bastard.
