New interview reveals Mai Kai restoration on the way
The great Mai Kai restaurant in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, is one of the last remaining mid-century tiki palaces. Hit hard by Hurricane Jeanne in 2004, the facility has been held together (literally) with duct tape and garbage bags for the last three years.
Good friend and fellow Crazed Mug Pablus recently spent a few days at the Mai Kai and informally interviewed the general manager, Kern Mattei. Pablus has posted his recollections at Tiki Central, including some good news (the insurance money is coming in and repairs are ready to begin) and some bombshells (the Mai Kai has been sold in totality to Dave Levy, who was co-owner along with one of the founder's wives, Mireille Levy, and his sister Kulani Thornton Gelardi).
