An 80-year-old Torry pine which was removed last month from Cardiff-by-the-Sea's Swami's park is about to get turned into a Moai.

The tree was damaged beyond repair by an infestation of bark beetles. Crews left an 11-foot-tall section of the tree, which will now be carved by Encinitas resident and woodworking artist Tim Richards and his son, Justin Ames.

The city council approved the statue at a meeting last week. Cardiff-by-the-Sea is infamous for the "Cardiff Kook," a much-maligned statue honoring surfers erected in 2007.
