Effort underway to save Hilton Head tiki hut
Plans to redevelop the Holiday Inn Oceanfront in Hilton Head, NC, into condos call for the demolition of the resort's tiki hut, which has been serving drinks since 1977. Local residents are banding together to save the Coligny Beach landmark with an online petition and awareness events.
Although the only "tiki" at the location is the hut itself, you have to feel for the impeding demolition of a place that so many people have good memories of.

Update: Due to differences between local and state zoning laws, the destruction of the hotel and tiki bar will be delayed until at least January of next year.

Update (10/15/07): Insiders say due to the downturn in the real estate market, the Holiday Inn property may stay a hotel and just be sold to another company, keeping the Tiki Hut safe.
