“Dolphin Tale” puts bone carver Tiki Doug on the big screen
This week I had the pleasure of meeting Tiki Doug, a bone-carver in the Polynesian tradition who recently was fortunate enough to have his work share time on the big screen with the likes of Harry Connick Jr., Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd.
When the costume designer for the movie Dolphin Tale saw Doug's work, she knew instantly that it was perfect for the film, whose script calls for Harry Connick Jr.'s character to carve a necklace for a young boy played by Nathan Gamble. Actress Cozi Zuehlsdorff wore a different piece in the film which Doug also carved.
These pieces, plus additional designs, including the Moai shown at the beginning of the post, are available at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (the home of the film's aquatic star, Winter) and a Doug's website.
The carvings are primarily made from cow bone, which is cut and polished to a fine shine.
