Apple profiles jazz ukulele virtuoso Lyle Ritz
Lyle Ritz suprised the world with his jazz influenced ukulele record, "How About Uke," in 1957, which has now influenced two generations of players to look at the diminuitive instrument in a different way.
The 77-year-old's newest CD, "No Frills," might just influence musicians to record in a different way too. Ritz recorded and engineered the tracks by himself on an Apple iBook laptop using the included GarageBand software. Ritz played his acoustic-electric uke through a USB preamp, but played the bass parts on a MIDI keyboard -- and ususal move for a musician who was one of the busiest studio bass players in the 1960s.
