A look back at LEGO Islanders
Way back in 1994, long before the Internet appeared to give groups of people interested in oddly specific things a way to connect and communicate with each other, LEGO released a few sets based on an Polynesian theme. Called Islanders, the themed was rife with snap-together islands, stone tiki, outrigger canoes, spear-toting natives, and the occasional pirate. Overall the line must not have done very well as it only lasted a year, but in 2001 one of the larger sets Enchanted Island was rereleased.
In the mid-2000s LEGO sets improved greatly in quality and detail, and the Islanders seem to have been one of the first steps in this direction. With the renewed interest in LEGO there's always a chance that the series may return, but in the meantime, the only way to find the sets are at garage sales and eBay, where complete sets command a fairly high price.
